Heat Wave | Hoist That Rag

My press pass from Busch stadium.

It was intensely hot and sweltering considering the heat wave we have
experienced here in sunny St. Louis for the past eleven days.

Thanks to my assistant Jeff Curry for helping with logistics and humping the gear through the depths of Busch Stadium and all points in between. After the shoot we proceeded down to Cherokee street to dine on spicy chicken tacos under the umbrellas on the patio at one of my favorite taco stands Neveria La Vallesana.

I overheard a tour guide at the stadium explain that the way the Kentucky Bluegrass stays green is to trick it to think it's colder by watering it with 40 degree water.
If I could only do that with my own yard.

Open Road

© David Torrence

Just got back from a much needed road trip to clear my head
and get ready for a few upcoming projects.I enjoyed the break
yet looking forward to the new possibilities. I was able to
photograph the predictable and the not so obvious
on a few rolls of film. Looking forward to the results.

Cheryl Wassenaar

© David Torrence

A few weeks ago I photographed a new piece of work by artist Cheryl Wassenaar.
We both used to have our studios in the same building a few years ago where I shot environmental portraits of her (above). Cheryl constructs her artwork from discarded commercial signage by transforming segments into colors and patterns incorporating language and numerals. Most of her other work hangs on the wall, but these new pieces are freestanding structures that measure 8.5 to 9 feet tall with different designs on all four sides. The images were shot at the different angles, and then with a human subject to show the sense of scale. Thanks to Mark Miselnicky for providing the human scale factor.

Donald Danforth Plant Science Center

A recent feature spread for St. Louis Magazine examining Danforth Science Center. I really enjoyed this project, regardless of being surrounded by such incredibly smart people it made my head hurt. Their mission is to enhance nutritional content of plants.
The subjects were Dr. Thomas Smith, Dr. William Danforth, and Dr. Roger Beachy.

Here are a few that didn't make the cut.
